Perfect Picture Book Friday - Night Shift

This review is part of Susanna Leonard Hill’s Perfect Picture Book series. Visit her site to see the other books recommended.

Title: Night Shift

Author & Illustrator: Jessie Hartland

Publisher: Bloomsbury U.S.A. Children’s Books October 2007

Suitable for: 4 and up

Themes: Jobs people do at night, human resources, employment

Opening Sentences:

“Late at night when the owls are out,

and the raccoons are diving into trash cans...

There are people out there awake doing all sorts of interesting things...

They are on the night shift.”

Synopsis:

The book covers a total of fourteen nighttime jobs. Each job is described with appropriate and interesting information accompanied by spirited character illustrations which are double-spread. Some of the jobs you'll find in Hartland's Night Shift are; window dressers, a late-night radio DJ, and bridge painters.

Why I Like This Book:

I like all job books for kids and that’s why I chose it. Night Shift is both informative and humorous. I like how over the wee hours of the night the story progressively moves towards morning with the author posing a question that leads to the next worker. Also parents and teachers can find this valuable because it teaches children about human resources and different types of employment.

  7. The art looks like a lot of fun. Some of our neighbors work night jobs, so it would be a good way to discuss that with our son when he gets older. It's a good reminder for adults too that no everyone works on the same schedule.

  8. Is there a donut maker in the book? When I was growing up, I always thought it would be cool to be making donuts in the middle of the night :) Thanks for the review!

  9. Great choice Jennifer. I love job books too. This one is special though because it gets kids thinking about "while they are sleeping," there are people doing important jobs. I used to write newspaper features on Christmas Eve, about the people who were working. Duh -- never thought to turn it into a kids book. Great review.

  10. What a great idea! I actually had a similar idea for a PB with a slightly different twist--so I would love to get a hold of this book and see what the author did with it.

It looks very well done! :)

  13. What a great idea! I love the idea of a book explaining about jobs kids might not think of right off, or might not realize are done at night! I also love being introduced to a book I hadn't heard of. Thanks for a great addition to our list!

  16. This sounds so super cute! I'm wondering if my night job as a mom reading this story to my kids at 3 in the morning to get them back to sleep is in there, lol.

  17. This is an adorable book. What a great concept for a childrens book. There are so many parents who are nurses, police officers etc. who work the night shift.

I just gave you an award over on my blog.

  18. You know, seeing books like this always reminds me that PBs really can be written about absolutely anything. I never would have thought to use this as subject matter, so it's really a great lesson to train ourselves to see ideas EVERYWHERE! And as for Night Shift itself, I really like the concept and those illustrations. Unusual choice -- I like!
